An 18 year old woman in Austria is suing her parents for posting pictures of her on Facebook without her permission. She asked her parents to remove the pictures repeatedly, explaining that they embarrassed her. What do you guys think of this, should she be suing her parents?
It's the child's right to know how she is being represented on the internet, especially these days when many employers will do a social media check before they hire someone. I don't know if the photos were in any way inappropriate or unflattering, but if they were then she might find herself in a challenging situation that she didn't create herself - it would be a different story if she were posting her own drunk party photos.
ReplyDeleteActually, they did include photos of her in the bath and naked. That could really embarrass her and she did ask her parents to remove them because they embarrassed her.
ReplyDeleteStill, do you think going to the extent of suing your parents is a little extreme? I mean, her parents raised her and fed and clothed her for eighteen years. They probably didn't have any malicious intent. Perhaps because their generation didn't grow up on the internet or with social media they didn't understand the ramifications of putting photos online. They could well have just thought it was like showing your distant family or their friends the album with the embarrassing photos of you in the tub!
